Ep 135: Battlin' Like a Boss 2

We offer tribute to all the memorable boss battles of video game history! Dr. Wily, M. Bison, Shao Kahn and so many more!

We welcome our buddy Nintenjoe back again to talk about one of the most memorable aspects of any video game, the BOSSES!!

Whether they're in charge of a single stage or are the final challenge waiting at the end, these characters are sure to make an impact. We'll tackle the more iconic "last guys" first, spotlighting iconic final bosses who come back again and again over multiple entries of a given series. Later on, we each choose 3 (possibly more obscure) battles that were really memorable to us personally.

Thrown in the middle is a musical interlude of an OCTOPONDER, where we'll play your favorite boss battle theme! Overall, this is an episode that video game fans won't want to miss!

If it screams, squelches, or bleeds, Kristin has probably written about it!

Ep 132: Not So Special Effects (w/ Bad CGI Sharks' Jason Ellsworth)

Be it CGI or practical, sometimes there are FX in movies that are so bad, they take us right out of the experience!

In a rare non-celebratory episode, we welcome the co-writer/star/director of the hilarious flick, BAD CGI SHARKS, Jason Ellsworth to join us in a critical discussion on some of the LESS impressive FX we've seen in movies. These are the sequences that are so jarringly inadequate, they hit like a Mac truck, smashing any semblance of immersion to smithereens.

We each pick 2 examples of the worth effects we could think of and describe them in excruciating detail for your listening pleasure!

Aside from his truly great indie flick BAD CGI SHARKS, you can also catch Jason shouting about movies on the weekly YouTube show, MAJAMA JAMS!

Ep 131: Wanna Be a Brawler / The Best Beat 'em Up Games

Also known as 'brawlers', we present our favorite side scrolling action video games!

A 'beat 'em up' or 'brawler' is a style of video game where the player character walks from left to right, beating up a seemingly endless number of enemies, until reaching the inevitable boss encounter at the end of the level. Simple, repetitive and addictive as heck, this genre of games were very popular in the late 80s and early 90s with beloved entries such as Final Fight, Double Dragon, Golden Axe and many many more.

For this episode, we'll present 6 primary games that we love in the genre, as well as plenty of honorable mentions!
